"The program has opened doors for me at my company and has given me a seat at the financial table. I have deeper knowledge, understanding, and networks."

Return on investment

In 2010, Slagle realized she "needed to supplement technical skills with core business knowledge. The Executive MBA program has opened doors for me at my company and has given me a seat at the financial table. I have deeper knowledge, understanding, and networks. Plus, I’ve become part of the strategic-leadership talent pool the company plugs into for succession planning."

Today, Slagle oversees two of Sigma-Aldrich Corp.’s market segments.

How she applies what she learned on the job

Slagle says "the timing of one of my strategy courses was perfect. One of our business segments wasn’t performing up to our objectives. I used the frameworks I learned in class, formed a cross-functional team, and identified areas for potential growth. It was a beautiful way to validate that the strategies worked."

What surprised her most about the program

"The EMBA staff was amazing. I didn’t have to worry about anything except leaning. Literally, 100 percent of my energy could go to program content.

"The quality of Washington University’s professional network was incredible, too. I had countless opportunities – inside and outside the EMBA program – to work with leaders from multiple industries. I also developed lifelong friendships with members of the EMBA community."
