Fang Liu, PhD, Finance 2014

On the Olin Experience:
I have had a wonderful experience at Olin – a shared community with an open-minded atmosphere that fosters creativity and innovative thinking. Discussion and collaboration between students and with faculty members are part of the curriculum, which is highly relevant and aimed at building a rigorous foundation for independent research. Overall, the experience I’ve had while working toward my PhD has equipped me with knowledge and skills required for a great start in my academic career. The most fascinating research area to me is the determination and measurement of risk. While it is widely accepted that “financial risk” is a complex notion and contains a variety of aspects, there is little agreement on how it is determined and what the best measure is to capture risk. This leads me to pursue my dissertation “Theories on Risk Taking and Measurement.”

On Collaboration with Olin Faculty:
Olin faculty members are approachable, and I always feel comfortable walking into their offices to discuss early research ideas. I’ve had the honor of working closely with Professors Philip Dybvig and Ohad Kadan, and have co-authored several papers with them. As advisors, they encourage me to think creatively and develop my own ideas and economic intuitions. I also benefit tremendously from my interactions with other faculty members, who offer critical and constructive comments that help strengthen my research.
