ChangeCasting is a new approach for leaders to accelerate and manage change within their organization whether private, public, or a nonprofit. Using Web 2.0 technologies coupled with a specific process and a set of vital guidelines, ChangeCasting helps you build trust and create understanding. It is this trust and understanding that can accelerate organizational change and help you pass your test of leader.

How to Get Started

ChangeCasting requires three types of information technology: recording and processing video, publishing the video to share it with your community, and a means to receive feedback anonymously. Options for each of the information technology elements range from very inexpensive systems costing less than a few hundred dollars, which are appropriate for small organizations, to expensive systems, which are appropriate for large organizations.

  • Recording ChangeCasts: Recording can be surprisingly easy. You'll want to weigh the merits of a simple webcam versus a more expensive video camera.
  • Processing Video: Editing your video can undermine your authenticity. Nonetheless, some editing features are useful.
  • Publishing: Organizational size and complexity play a vital role in your choice of distributing ChangeCasts.
  • Anonymous Feedback: Perhaps the most difficult, yet vital, aspect of ChangeCasting is enabling anonymous feedback. Technologically, several options are available.

About the Author

Jackson Nickerson is the Frahm Family Professor of Organization and Strategy at the Olin Business School, director of the Brookings Executive Education program, and a nonresident senior fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution. His research focuses on leadership issues around why firms choose different organizational structures and the performance implications of these choices; with a special emphasis on knowledge, innovation, and problem formulation and solving.
