Mike Mingcheng Wei, Operations & Manufacturing Management, PhD 2014

On Collaboration with Olin Faculty:
The relationships between faculty and students in the learning and research processes are a hallmark of Olin’s PhD program. Through dynamic collaboration with Professor Yossi Aviv and Professor Fuqiang Zhang, I fostered and solidified my research interests in developing game-theoretical models to understand the impact of consumer behavior on operational strategies. In my dissertation, “Innovative Dynamic Pricing of Fashion Products: Learning, Sophisticated Consumers, and Social Networks,” I propose various innovative dynamic pricing schemes to meet emerging challenges of strategic consumer behavior (i.e., consumers delay their purchases to take the advantage of possible future discounts) and social networks (i.e., consumers influence each other through social interactions). On Olin’s Curriculum:
The personalized advising and customized course selection at Olin support and fuel my research interests. Foundation courses on mathematics, operations research, and operations management infuse me with quantitative abilities to develop mathematical models that help analyze managerial problems and provide insights into complex scenarios. Olin’s PhD curriculum also provides me with opportunities to broaden my knowledge base through taking courses from other diverse but highly-related disciplines, such as economics, engineering, and marketing. This rigorous and comprehensive curriculum prepares me to be a research-savvy and technically skilled contributor to the operations and manufacturing field.
