Innovation has become the watchword for organizations seeking to bring new value to customers and constituencies. New products, new services, new processes for lowering cost and raising quality are commonly viewed as the standard bearers for creating new value. But innovation also can emerge by developing new approaches to leadership.

Leadership innovations help accelerate change and adaption in organizations. They help leaders confront an ever-increasing complexity in which their organizations operate. They change the way leaders can bring people together to accomplish important feats. Yet all too often supposedly new leadership approaches are no more than yesterday’s discarded panaceas.

Brookings Institution Press is the publishing arm of the Brookings Institution, a private nonprofit organization devoted to research and education on important issues of U.S. domestic and foreign policy. It supports the Brookings mission by bringing the highest quality independent research and analysis to bear on current and emerging policy problems and offering practical approaches to those problems in language aimed at the general public.
