Industry
I work in the finance industry. In 2021, I founded a quantitative hedge fund called Pantile Asset Research where I run firm strategy and day-to-day operations. At Pantile, I create stock trading strategies, based on quantitative models that I learned and experimented with during my time at Olin, and clients invest in those strategies to grow their wealth.
Why Olin?
I wanted a doctoral program whose pedagogy contained finance and economic theory taught by world-class academic researchers but also contained opportunities to apply that theory to “real-world” uses in the financial industry. My goal was to become the best quantitative financial researcher I could so I was able to provide empirical value to my clients, and my education and research experience at Olin was exactly what enabled me to do just that.
Dissertation Project
My dissertation project was extremely difficult, as it tested every facet of ability in terms perseverance, intellectual agility, time management, partnering and general creativity. My doctoral committee at Olin was extremely supportive, helpful and kind. While the project was difficult, I was able to turn it into a dissertation paper I am very proud of. I've also used my dissertation paper in industry to garner support for my work and research after graduation, which is a great bonus.
Advice for Prospective Students
Olin is a place where you can expect to work hard, collaborate with other great students and faculty, and along the way, learn many, many new things. It’s also a place where the faculty and staff are there to help you make the most of your experience and make that experience as enjoyable and valuable as possible. St. Louis is a great city to go to graduate school, given its food, sports and entertainment options, and the campus of WashU is a perfect place to learn, study and grow.
